Go to the Ufficio entrate nearest you with your passport and permesso di soggiorno. See the listing UFFICI FINANZARI in the white pages of the phone book for office addresses and phone numbers. In a matter of minutes you will be given a little card with your own personal tax code stamped on it. :: RESIDENZA (RESIDENCE)
You need to become a resident to sign up for the public health service and get official working papers, among other things. You apply for residency through an office in your quartiere called ufficio anagrafe (registry office). Check with your local quartiere to find out where your local ufficio anagrafe is. Call ahead to ask which documents you need to bring in addition to your permesso di soggiorno when you go to the office to apply (you can fin the list of uffici anagrafe here below).
Until your residence is official, you will be given a temporary document verifying that you've applied for it. You can use this document to do things requiring residency, EG, apply for health coverage (Health Care).
One or two weeks after you have applied to become a resident, the police will stop by the address you listed on your application form to verify that you really do live where you said. Put your name by the doorbell, even with a temporary stickerso that they know where to ring. If you're not at home when they stop by, they will leave a postcard to let you know they came and that they will be back. Once the police check and verification of your paperwork has been completed, notification that your application for residency has been approved will be mailed to you.

:: CARTA D'IDENTITA' (IDENTIFICATION CARD)
- European Community citizens use their identification cards to travel from one community country to another. 
- Non EC citizens who become official residents of the country are not granted that privilege, but the identification card is still a very handy document to have.
Anyone who asks you for identification will recognize it immediately. Get the identity card at your local anagrafe. Call ahead to ask what you need to bring with you.
